I need to totally remodel my rental and I need to replace all the sheet rock. How do I find out if the walls have asbestos in them. Then what do I do about getting rid of the asbestos walls. Can I take them out myself or do I have to pay someone to come get them out?

Is it possible that a very old wall air conditioner could have asbestos inside it?

Josh S asked:

I live in an apartment that came with a very old air conditioner. When I opened the front panel I discovered that there is a blackish gray brittle material used as installation around the inside edge. I don’t know how old it is, but it reminds me of asbestos. I don’t know what asbestos looks like exactly, so I was wondering if anyone knows if this is what it is or if it is just some other harmless material. I don’t trust the apartment manager to have followed the proper safety regulations and removed asbestos from the property. Give me a shout if you know the answer.

Asbestos found during insurance repair, what is the impact to me ?

deasmi asked:

I own the leasehold on a two bedroom flat. A leak from the flat above has led to a buildings insurance claim. The builders started this morning and have found suspected asbestos. The removal of this, to complete the repair, is covered.

Asbestos was not mentioned in any documentation when I bought the property April 2006.

My question is what impact does this have on my ability to sell the flat and if the freeholder converted this flat in 1995 do I have any comeback to them ?

Thanks

They had asbestos siding and probably asbestos insulation. Is there anything I can do short of hiring an expensive company to detect and clean my property of asbestos contamination? Will it be OK for my child to play in the yard after I cut the grass? Will I be OK when I cut the grass?

My old farmhouse still has white asbestos siding/shingles. My grandfather put them up around the 1950’s. He died of lung cancer in 1969/1970. I was wondering where it came from, and what makes it so carcinogenic…And if they knew of the side effects of asbestos as early as the 1920’s, why did they still permit it to be manufactured?? Anybody know about this?

Who is responsible for finding out if asbestos is present, a contractor of a project or a home owner?

DN asked:

My construction project was halted by the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection after a neighbor complained about asbestos present. The contractor did not realize that asbestos was present and neither did the architect, who at one point certified that asbestos was absent. I as a homeowner did not know that asbestos was present and trusted the contractor or the architect to find out if the substance was present. Is the contractor responsible? He is the one who haphazardly modified the asbestos insulation of the house and did not even realize the asbestos was what it was. The project was ordered to be suspended by the NYC DEP and delayed the remodeling for a couple of weeks and costed me about $10,000 (including filing fees).

Our house is an old house and we have recently discovered asbestos in several places around our home. And we got rid of most of it and soon discovered that our carpet has recycled hessian that was used to transport asbestos. Can that asbestos come through the hessian? Am i safe?
