According to info I’ve seen on the web, if the home was built after 1975 or so, there should not be asbestos. We recently made an offer on a house and had some “popcorn” tested to see if it contained asbestos. We looked in the yellow pages under Environmental…..and found an asbestos testing lab. We sent about 1/2 cup of the “popcorn” to the lab, they tested it and called with the result. Then they sent us a document for our records. Was all done in 2 days. Cost $30.00 (in Washington State)

Asbestos in building materials was phased out in the 1970s. If you want to be sure, there are labs that will test building materials for asbestos. Just search your yellow pages or the internet for one. I worked at one for 2 years, and they have locations all over the country. Send me an email if you would like the company name.

As long as it is not friable (loose and flaking) it sopposedly isn’t a problem . They recomend useing latex paint to seal it.
Being built in 1984 or so it shouldn’t have a problem with asbestos
most “popcorn ” is actually cork

Generally speaking most hardware stores carry asbestos kits. I assume one of these stores is in your area -just ask the salesperson.
Home Depot
Lowe’s
Ace Hardware
True Value
Also some drug stores may carry it as well -CVS for example. Prices may vary but the procedure is the same. You take a sample and mail it off to a lab that sends you certified results.
