How do I find out if the homes in my neighborhood contain Asbestos?

Diemsum asked:

I live in South San Jose near Branham & Snell. The homes in that are are around 25-30 years old. I am in the process of renovating my home. Does anyone know if the homes in that area contain asbestos popcorn ceilings.

Popcorn ceilings came long after asbestos was discovered to cause cancer.

Steam pipes, boilers, and furnace ducts insulated with an asbestos blanket or asbestos paper tape. These materials may release asbestos fibers if damaged, repaired, or removed improperly.

Rebryant is totally wrong..acoustic(popcorn) did in fact contain asbestos..I have done painting and drywall for 37 years..and actually had to take tests at the hospital to see if any signs of asbestos in my system once they discovered the hazords of it…
here is a couple paragraphs concerning this matter..and also the link it is on..1978 is when they made it illegal to use it in popcorn ceilings..but alot still in stock in big warehouses was used for a few years afterwards..

It was legal to use asbestos in popcorn ceilings until 1978, however existing stocks of acoustic mix were used well into the 1980’s. Because of this, people who live or work in homes or businesses that were built prior to the date when asbestos could have been used in the construction of the building fear that asbestos indeed exists in the buildings where they live and reside. It is very likely that if your home was constructed before 1978 and your home has an acoustic popcorn ceiling your acoustic ceiling asbestos concerns are legitimate. In order to find out whether or not your house or business does contain asbestos, a sample must be tested by a lab to determine if indeed the ceiling is positive for asbestos and presents a danger. It is impossible to determine if a ceiling contains asbestos simply by looking at it without a microscope and a trained eye.
